Jeopardy: Watson has a very impressive, great day !

I was so impressed with Watson’s performance today in Jeopardy against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Jennings looking slightly flabbergasted was at $4,800 at the end of the 2nd day, while Rutter was at $10,400 and Watson ended with a dominating $35, 734.

I was very impressed with Watson’s UI, the choice of language used when it chose topics, and the quality of its text-to-speech. Like the people in the audience, I was amused when Watson wagered a non-round number ($6,435!) at one point in Double Jeopardy. And because Watson did so well on a number of questions, it was odd that the system suggested “What is Toronto???” for the American city whose primary airport is named after a World War II hero, and the secondary airport after a WW II battle. (I got this one: What’s Chicago? ! 🙂 ).

All in all, it was exhilarating watching the show today. I read somewhere that Watson crashed several times during the show, but even so it is such a coup and a wonderful piece of research and engineering for the wonderful team at IBM. Hats off, people ! I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s 3rd and last installment !
